The refinery, headquarters in Durban, is the largest crude oil refinery in South Africa. It processes 24 000 tons of crude per day and produces 2.7 billion liters of petrol per year.
South-Africa produces 136 517 barrels per day.
While companies such as SASAL can produce fuel from gas reserves or from coal, the bulk of South Africa’s fuel comes from crude oil imports which is then sent to refineries such as the ones in Durban. Fuel is then transport via pipelines to inland areas and transported via trucks to petrol filling stations.
The oil industry in South-Africa is thriving, out of 243 million liters of new oil sold per annum, 120 million liters is collected for recycling. 10% of the used oil collected is re-fined back into base oil.
In South-Africa the re-refining facilities need to run 24/7 to be cost effective, and the quantity of used oil currently being collected in South Africa may not guarantee a steady flow to the re-refinery.
We have world class re-refining plants already operating in South Africa, but even they must import used oil from neighboring countries to sustain a steady supply to their plants. Europe has a very high level of environmental awareness – they label their re-refined base oil with environmental endorsements. Our market is primarily driven on price and re-refined oil needs to compete on price with virgin oil.”
It is crucial for used oil to be refined. This will save the planet from more pollution and lots of money. If you are in the motor industry or food, oil collectors will pay you for your used oil.
